Me and my health: Niamh Rice on her lifestyle

Do you take regular exercise and if so, what?

love going for walks and before lockdown, I would’ve gone to yoga classes but over the last year I have found some good yoga apps which are great to fit in around working and home life. The Spa at Culloden offers a wide range of classes from HITT, Spin and Yoga.

What is the worst illness you’ve had?

I’ve been pretty lucky to never have anything serious. I did have my appendix removed as a teenager which was pretty sore at the time.

How healthy is your diet?

I wouldn’t say it was 100% perfect as I definitely have a sweet tooth; however, I love home cooked food and try and make as much food from good fresh ingredients. Chickpea curry is one of my favourite dishes with garam masala, cumin and ginger.

BBC Good Food is one of my go to places for ideas. As a busy working mum I always try to be as organised as I can and meal planning in advance definitely helps me stay one step ahead and ensures we are able to have a variety of healthy, tasty food.

Any bad habits?

Plenty I’m sure. Drinking too many cups of tea and possibly too many biscuits with the tea.

Do you drink and smoke/if so how much?

I don’t smoke and drink rarely. If I do have a tipple, I enjoy a Bramble cocktail.

Do you take any supplements?

Not all the time, sometimes in the winter with cold and flu season. I love smoothies so I get a lot of what I need from these.

I love spinach, pineapple and coconut water with a squeeze of fresh lemon. Fruit and vegetables are such a good source of vitamins and minerals and are a very important part of a healthy, balanced diet so I try to incorporate as much as possible into the food we eat every day.

How do you take time out?

At the moment with two small children I don’t always get time to take time out for myself.

However, I love getting out for walks and taking time out for the family, having fun and making memories together.

I love taking the boys to Donegal, they love the beach, making sand castles and getting in the sea. In today’s busy world, it’s important that we all look after our mental wellbeing and taking time out for yourself is a big part of this. Try your best to switch off, do something you love — even the simple things like a regular walk can make a big difference.

How well do you sleep?

Usually I get seven hours’ sleep. Sometimes it is less if the children are up during the night.

What time do you go to bed/get us usually?

Normally go to bed around 11pm then up at about 7am.

Do you worry about getting old?

No, not really. I feel getting old is a part of life and with that you gain experience to grow and change.

What is your go-to product that keeps you feeling healthy?

Nutribullet. I love making smoothies with fresh fruit and vegetables and my sons Harvey (three) and Ethan (one) love them as well. Having the Nutribullet is great for making them smooth and helps gets the five a day into the diet.

The spa at Culloden recently underwent a £750k investment which included a new linear vitality pool and a Tylarium, which is a combination of a sauna and steam room. The wellness facilities have been upgraded with a new larger steam room and the spacious pool which spans most of the ground floor. There is also a new couples’ treatment room and two additional bespoke pedicure treatment rooms. www.hastingshotels.com/culloden-spa
