QUB CardioSoc are a group of medical students at Queen’s keen on promoting cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery and healthy living. Students from this Cardiology Society at Queen’s University are organising a 5k colour run in Belfast’s Ormeau Park to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.
The event, which will be held on Sunday, March 12th is open to everyone and will help support the charity’s lifesaving research into fighting heart and circulatory diseases.
The students had a great success with last year’s event and are hoping for even greater numbers to turn out this year.
The organisers have said it is an event for everyone and that those taking part can complete the course at their own pace either walking or running.
Money raised at from the run will go to support the innovative research carried out by the British Heart Foundation. Each year, heart and circulatory diseases account for almost a quarter of all deaths in Northern Ireland. That amounts to more than 4,000 deaths annually or an average of 11 deaths per day.
There are an estimated 225,000 people living with heart and circulatory diseases in Northern Ireland. Studies have shown exercise such as running can help prevent heart disease but almost 45 per cent of adults in Northern Ireland do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity.
Head of British Heart Foundation Northern Ireland, Fearghal McKinney thanked the Queen’s CardioSoc students for organising the event.
“Events like this are a fun way to raise funds for the lifesaving research the British Heart Foundation carries out and are also a great way of encouraging physical activity.
“I want to thank the cardiology society at Queen’s for organising this event and for their continued support. We had a great time at last year’s event and I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and get involved, either by running, volunteering or by cheering on those who are taking part.”
The colour run will take place in Ormeau Park on Sunday, March 12th at 10.30am with on-the-day registration from 10am.
Dress code is a white shirt and tickets are £5 for individuals, and £4 each if you bring friends or family (kids under 5 go free). Funds from ticket sales will be donated directly to the BHF.
